I have cancelled my Rogers cable account after being with them for over ten years. Yesterday, I received a notice from them that they were increasing the fee by 5% - up $2.50 to just a notch under $63 per month with taxes. This is a 30% increase in 5 years.

I had a look at the channels I am getting...

  • 2 home shopping channels - I am paying for this crap!
  • 5 french language channels - I don't speak French
  • 3 kids channels - no children
  • a number of channels that play the same thing as at least one and usually two other channels - soap operas, game shows, the same old same old multiple times
  • a movie channel that plays movies made in the 1930s. Another one that plays movies that are usually more than 10 years old
  • a channel that plays only sitcom reruns from several decades ago. Another that plays stand up comedians and sitcom re-reuns.
  • 2 religious channels - I am an atheist
  • 2 Hollywood gossip channels (I mean really)
  • A couple of American channels that play a lot of infomercials on the week-ends

Of the 60 odd channels I am paying for, I watch maybe 10. I finally got tired of being gouged for things I don't watch and I cancelled. This whole bundling business that Rogers (and others) foist on us is just plain evil. How many times have you gone into a s tore to buy something and been told you can't buy it unless you also buy this thing over here? The person I finally got on the line wanted to offer me some sort of deal that would have required me sticking around for another year. I told her to forget it.

There are some channels I will miss, but I have the internet (not with Rogers, fortunately).
